Ink Sketch of Finch and Jeff

Yesterday, I was working on a digital painting for #JanuaryDechART Prompt 28 (’Craving’) that I didn’t expect to be so tedious and time-consuming to accomplish. So at one point last night, I decided I needed to take a break from it because I was starting to get a bit of a headache working on the details, and that was when this little ink sketch came about. 

I had just finished watching Apple’s film ‘FINCH’ at the time, too, starring Tom Hanks as the titular character and Caleb Landry Jones as his robot sidekick. (Quick and massive shoutout to @voidoutbt aka @missteal1-blog​ for recommending this beautiful film to me! Thank you so much, hun!) The film didn’t have any business being this sweet and beautiful and sad, but I am glad that it is. An effectively emotional and gripping story that, while not being the most original, really does pack a punch. The robots are so humanised in this story, I legit squealed when one of them met a terrible and graphically violent end midway through the film (mind you, I still shiver from just thinking about it). 

(also this film reminds me so much of DEATH STRANDING, from the setting to the vibe to the costumes -- I love jumpsuit uniforms XD)

Anyways, about the sketch: it is inspired by one of my favourite parts of the film, where Finch is clearly distressed after finding out about something and he immediately runs to his fridge to get a can (of peaches, I reckon) to eat. He seemingly calms down after that first bite. It’s just a beautiful human moment for Finch, that I wanted to draw it, hence this picture.

Here is an ink sketch of a scene from THE GREEN KNIGHT -- again. Yes, I am currently quite obsessed with this story, and probably will be for a while. 

In this scene, Sir Gawain goes to meet the titular Green Knight at the Green Chapel -- an old ruin covered in creepers and plants -- to fulfil his half of the game, that the Green Knight shall finish the game by loping his head off, which have our hero frozen in fear moments before it is supposed happen. 

Here, I wanted to continue with the ink and yellow/ochre brush pen style that I have been doing, only used in a different way this time -- to suggest illumination. Had some help from the white gel pen too. A fun little piece, and I’m quite happy with the way it turned out. 

(Please ignore the Anglo-Saxon runes. I basically took most of the letters over to runes, with some exceptions depending on the sounds made. Mostly guesses based on my (relatively basic) understanding of runes) 

(By the way, if anyone here wishes to correct me on the runes, I welcome the corrections)

Prompt 9: Healing

Today was a little bit of a low energy day (mostly a bleed-over from the previous day), and I was feeling the urge to create art as personal therapy. I initially opted to create something original and digital, but after blocking in the colours, I abandoned it. I just wasn’t feeling up to it. I wasn’t in the right mood to work on anything original and I didn’t want to have to look at a phone screen for this, too. 

It was then I decided to pick up my sketchbook and ink pen and just go with a screencap I took from THE GREEN KNIGHT, which is of a breath-taking landscape shot seen when Sir Gawain rides back home after his second encounter with the Green Knight. 

It had been a long while since I last drew a landscape piece with ink, so I thought I’d give this a try. 

I’m still feeling a little low energy, but I feel better now having completed this piece. 

Touched up with a bit of light ochre highlighting there too.

I just finished watching this film today, and I never knew I needed to experience this story so much! It’s soooooooooo interesting, and absolutely riveting! One of those few special movies that really resonated with me, too. 

And after watching that, I couldn’t help myself to a fan art sketch. I needed to.

On this day, I wasn’t particularly in a good place, creative-wise. 

I initially had an idea to do something related to Jurassic Park. This is one of my all-time favourite films and I basically grew up around this franchise, so I thought it was about time I did some fanart about it -- like the claw scene in the kitchen -- but I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. I also wasn’t sure if I was being wildly inconsistent with my sources of inspiration. If you have looked through my last few pieces of art, I have been jumping around various fandoms. 

So I abandoned it altogether to think up on other possible things I could make from this prompt, including the scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where Buckbeak flies over the Lake and also the Chiralium deposits in Death Stranding -- things which are within the vicinity of my last few inspirations. 

At one point, I gave up thinking any further because I couldn’t decide so I considered making an original piece, but as I started it, I wasn’t particularly happy with the sketch that turned up. It was essentially a person seen from behind reaching into the sky with clawed hands, and an aura shaped like dragon claws glowed around them. As cool as the idea seemed in my head at first, the piece felt uninspired. 

By that time, the night was getting late and I hadn’t had anything done, and while I knew I didn’t need to force myself to make anything, I still felt like I needed to create something; there was still energy that needed expressing. Beleaguered and somewhat exhausted, I decided to make things simple; screw everything that I have thought about, let’s go back to Jurassic Park. 

And I’m glad that I did. I didn’t draw the kitchen scene, because I still felt like I couldn’t pull it off, so instead I went ahead in the film to another iconic scene after that; where Grant, Elie and the kids were trying to get the door locks to work and I had loads of fun figuring out this picture despite the exhaustion. Perspective takes time to work with. ;)

I initially considered colouring, but seeing as it was already late and I needed my sleep soon, I decided -- after having the pencil sketch done -- to try for ink instead. Makes for a more dramatic picture, after all, don’t you think?

I’m very much still deeply obsessed with Death Stranding, and I am in love with the Porter suit! I am in love its entire design, with all of its many intricate details and functionalities.

So I thought I’d draw it, using the photo of Hideo Kojima trying out the suit as reference. 

The Strand

"There is something about the beach, that enthralls me. The way the sound of the waves just drowns everything out, and makes one imagine things one would otherwise have no time to imagine. It makes one consider many things, many possibilities. It’s a mysterious place, it’s a wondrous place, it’s a frightening place, where the mind stretches as deep as the ocean, wrought with marvels and terrors. Fascinating.”

Okay, I didn’t really have any other reason for this piece than to test the new Gelly Roll white ink pens that just arrived at my doorstep. I did the picture with brush pen several days back, which had this large patch of dark blue in the lower right corner that just made the picture looked empty. But then I thought: “Wouldn’t it be great it I had white ink to write something there and make it look like one of those beautiful art journaling pages?” That was when I went to Shopee to look for white ink pens. 

And today they arrived, and I went to town with them. I am, admittedly, very happy with the results. I even coloured in the sky with the white ink so that it won’t look all black and flat.

#AugustDechART 2021 wrap-up!

#AugustDechART 2021 is done! And it has been a very interesting experience. The last time I joined a challenge like this was back in 2019 for Inktober, and while I had a bit of fun with that one, #AugustDechART was the one that got me to step out of my comfort zone. I found myself doing more portraits than I would normally care to do over a span of a month and I have developed a new-found love for the brush pen medium -- a medium I have been far too cowardly to commit to because I didn't understand how to use it. Also, the #DechartGames community is awesome! Everyone is so supportive and motivating, and it's amazing to see various forms of works inspired by these prompts. I have learned a great deal and developed more as an artist doing this, so I would like to say to #DechartGames duo, Bryan Dechart and Amelia Rose Blaire, that you have my deepest appreciation and gratitude. You guys are awesome! Thanks for this experience and I can't wait for the next one! Keep on being awesome!
