OCTOBER 2022 SKETCH WRAP-UP

Me sketches for the month of October. Quite a lot of Jack Quaid because I am still absolutely crazy about the guy, plus one of him and Erin Moriarty. Then some of Florence Welch, then of Connor -- this was spontaneously inspired by a hilarious post by a mutual on Twitter. Then, to end the month, three sketches of musicians whose works I love and support. Luke Levenson, Malingo and finally, Ryan Karazija of LOW ROAR, who had sadly passed just end of this month (Rest in love, Ryan.)

Bonus pieces. Did portraits of Jack Quaid with ink and gouache -- first time for me using this for portraits! Very interesting process and definitely gonna try more in the future.

A Steam-Powered Giraffe Fanart

This piece is inspired by a song from SPG's Space Opera 'The Vice Quadrant', called 'Soliton'. It's a very relaxing song, and it is one of my top favourites from the band. Also a new fan.

Big shout out to a dear friend, who introduced the band to me!

I have officially finished my first playthrough of HORIZON ZERO DAWN! What a journey! Has taken me a real long time -- though somehow, my derpy ass still managed to not complete much of the side quests, so yeah I missed the inclusion of some pretty big NPCs into the final battle, which I will definitely want to attempt again for that. In any case, can't wait to experience HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST once it is out on PC.

In the meantime, here is Aloy with mah boi Teb~ :3

And here is what the original photo might have looked like:

That's A Bolian.

And then she says, she says - get this - she says, "Oh, no. That's a Bolian."

Quick throwback to Season 1 Episode 2 of STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS.

Yeah, more Boimler and Mariner, but this time, bringing Tendi as well, cos why not? (Yeah, she wasn't there when Boimler told on Mariner, but thought it would be a good piece to practice drawing her). Will eventually bring in Rutherford once I figure how to draw his implant.

The Resurrection Of Dance

This picture is inspired by a recent performance by Florence + The Machine at Madison Square Garden. I absolutely love the energy Florence exudes throughout, especially during her performance of 'My Love'. Here is the recording of it.

The part which sent me was the bridge, where they went low for a bit, and Florence spoke a little about the song, how it was written during a time where people could not meet up and dance together, before inviting everyone to join her in practising the resurrection of dance. This led to an epic buildup to the final chorus, where the crowd joined in and OMG, I just love it that they did that!

More Mariner and Boimler

Quick one for tonight, cos I'm still thinking about this moment from STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS Season 3 Episode 8. Great episode too, btw!

I recently came across a glazing demonstration video, and I was quite intrigued by the process.

For those who are not familiar with it: they would start with an underpainting of the lights and shadows, before adding a layer of semi-transparent paint over them to bring out the tones with more colour.

I thought I'd give this a go in digital, just to see how I would feel about it. I realise that as I write this, it isn't too different from the usual digital painting process that I have used in the past, what with all the layers that we can play around with and whatnot, but this would be my first conscious attempt to do it in this manner.

So, I started with this as the underpainting, mapping out the tones and at the same time, on the composition of the picture:

It isn't exactly as precise as how it would have been with the real process, but it is a pretty solid start.

After that, I used a glaze brush to add the translucent colours in, followed by some opaque colours to touch up on the details, and adjust the composition where required.

By the end, there is definitely satisfaction that came from having achieved something through this process. Much like how I worked on the Postcard painting, to have things structured in the beginning where the foundations are laid and then later -- once things have been set up nicely -- being able to tweak and have a bit of fun with the rest of the process, does make for a great sense of accomplishment, I feel.

Dreams Of Montana II

Yeah, more landscape art inspired by Montana, cos why not?

Also today, while painting this, I was reacquainted with an old classic, through a new re-recording, which I have only just found out about.

Hehehe, this brought back so much childhood memories with SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON, I couldn't help but let the movie's setting (which I later found out was Oregon -- not too far from Montana) inspire bits of the painting.

SEPTEMBER 2022 SKETCHES WRAP-UP

Did less sketches this month, but definitely finding myself slowly leaning into Jack Quaid/Hughie Campbell -- because I have recently started watching 'THE BOYS' (finished all three seasons) and I am obsessed with it. Also, managed one portrait of Newt Pulsifer from GOOD OMENS. Dude is an absolute boi XP .

Dreams Of Montana

Okay, so not exactly Montana, but it is at the very least inspired by the landscapes there.

I came across a video recently for CCR's song 'Have You Seen The Rain?' and, yeah, I clicked in because Jack Quaid's in it. The location where they filmed it seemed really beautiful, so I looked it up and found out that it is in Montana.

This brought me back to 'The Horse Whisperer', one of my few conscious media experiences of the place, and one where I had some fond memories off, mostly because of the setting of the film and the music. That got me to watching a few clips of it again on YouTube -- and I might just rewatch it again one of these days. Here are two scenes which also features two of my favourite tracks from the OST.

From there, inspirations for this painting started pouring in. And so, this painting was born.

I've never been to Montana, but having seen that music video and watched more clips of 'The Horse Whisperer', I would definitely like to visit it someday.
